Education

Greensboro has a strong history as a center of education. Home of the first co-educational school in North Carolina – Guilford College, and the first state-chartered college for women – Greensboro College, Greensboro has understood the value of world-class education since it was founded 200 years ago. Today, the city has five colleges and universities, a new law school through Elon University School of Law, and Guilford Technical Community College.

Guilford County Schools(GCS) is the third largest K-12 school district in North Carolina, educating over 71,000 students at 120 schools. The school system has just unveiled an aggressive strategic plan for achieving excellence in eight key areas by 2012. GCS provides a broad range of options including magnet schools, early and middle college programs, IB programs, and even a Newcomer’s School designed to educate recently arrived immigrants and refugees.

Greensboro also offers a wealth of private education options including Greensboro Day School, Caldwell Academy, New Garden Friends School, Oak Ridge Millitary Academy, and Our Lady of Grace Catholic School.
